With election day just 2 weeks away, the upcoming elections were the major topic on the Mark McCaig show this past week. Mark was joined by Jared Woodfill, Chairman of the Harris County Republican Party to discuss what and who is on the ballot.
Republican State Representative Sarah Davis is one of the top recipients of funding from the special interest group Texans For Lawsuit Reform, having received over $100,000 from TLR in the last several weeks alone. Representative Davis tells her conservative base that she considers herself to be pro-life and has also made such claims to the press.
However, Rep. Davis’ claim to be pro-life appear to be suspect at best. According to Planned Parenthood, Rep. Davis received a score of 100% on their candidate questionnaire. Any pro-life activist will tell you that a sitting legislator who received a score of 100% on a Planned Parenthood survey not only does not share pro-life values but is likely an enemy of the pro-life cause. One can also ask the question why an allegedly pro-life legislator would even fill out a Planned Parenthood questionnaire to seek their support in the first place.
This is not the first time where TLR and its supporters have worked to oppose the pro-life cause. The foundation of one of TLR’s largest donors, Harold Simmons, has made a number of large contributions to Planned Parenthood. One of TLR’s top lawyers and lobbyists, Mike Hull, has testified alongside groups like Planned Parenthood against bills supported by the pro-life community in Texas. When #StopTLR’s parent organization, Texans For Individual Rights, reached out to TLR to work together on legislative proposals involving the use of the civil justice system to protect innocent human life, TLR refused to help and attacked our organization.
TLR’s massive contributions to candidates with 100% scores on Planned Parenthood questionnaires may come as a shock to many conservatives, especially those concerned about social issues. This news comes on the heels of last week’s report that TLR is once again working to defeat Republican candidates in the general election. But as those who have tracked TLR’s activities will know, TLR actively works against the interests of grassroots conservatives and is concerned only about what is best for their donors.

According to campaign finance reports filed earlier this week, the special interest group Texans For Lawsuit Reform has made significant contributions to Democratic State Representatives Ryan Guillen and Eddie Lucio III for their 2012 re-election campaigns against Republican opponents. These recent contributions continue TLR’s habit of funding liberal Democratic candidates, which now exceeds $3 million in recent years. These reports show a contribution of $10,000 from TLR to the Ryan Guillen campaign on 9/14/2012 and contributions to the Eddie Lucio III campaign of $5,000 on 9/10/2012 and $15,000 on 9/14/2012.
TLR’s continued support of Democrats in the general election is hardly a surprise considering that TLR’s President and PAC Chairman, Dick Trabulsi, is a longtime Democrat with a history of supporting the likes of Jimmy Carter, Walter Mondale, and Bill Clinton. However, this significant financial support of liberal Democrats should give great pause to any Texas conservative who falsely believes that TLR supports their values. TLR’s major donations to Guillen and Lucio against their Republican opponents greatly undermines efforts by Republicans to grow the Republican Party in South Texas and attract an increased share of the Hispanic vote.
Texans For Individual Rights is the sponsor of #StopTLR, a multimedia project designed to educate Texas conservatives about Texans For Lawsuit Reform’s special interest agenda and support of liberal candidates and causes. Since launching earlier this year, the #StopTLR Facebook page has received over 70,000 “likes”, making it the most popular Facebook page dealing with Texas public policy issues.

This week on the Mark McCaig show, Mark discussed a number of topics in the news including Hugo Chavez’s endorsement of Barack Obama. Mark also discussed how whistleblower lawsuits have saved Texas taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars and how special interest groups like Texans For Lawsuit Reform side with wrongdoers over taxpayers. Later in the show, Mark talks about the growth of the liberty movement with Dave Nalle of the Republican Liberty Caucus.
