In the latest in a string of humiliating electoral defeats, Texans For Lawsuit Reform backed candidate Carol Alvarado was soundly defeated in her bid to replace the late Mario Gallegos in the State Senate District 6. Alvarado, a liberal Democrat, received nearly $300,000 from TLR and tens of thousands of dollars more from individuals who are closely tied to TLR.
TLR’s big money certainly appears that it was ultimately a liability to Alvarado’s campaign, just as TLR’s money has proven to be an albatross around the necks of many other candidates, such as Elizabeth Ames-Jones and David Medina, whose races were viewed as top priorities for TLR.
TLR’s decision to invest so heavily in Alvarado’s campaign, despite her far-left voting record and radical pro-abortion views, is further evidence that TLR is an opponent of the conservative cause in Texas. At the same TLR was throwing money at Alvarado, who was a vocal opponent of the pro-life sonogram bill last session, they had the nerve to send mailers to Republican activists across Texas making the false claim that TLR supports conservative values. TLR’s financial support of Alvarado and other Democrats, totaling nearly $3.4 million, was noticeably absent from their mailer.”
Additionally, TXIR is calling on Dick Weekley, TLR’s Chairman and CEO, to respond to the open letter recently sent to him by Mark McCaig. This letter, which raises questions about Weekley’s personal support of Alvarado against Republican candidates in the SD 6 election and TLR’s deceitful mailer to Republican activists, can be viewed here.
